Creating Event Magic

Creating Event Magic“Art leaves its mark, indelible and essential, and it helps us both understand what has come before, what will come again, and what’s happening right now. It gives context and inspiration.” Chuck Wendig

theSQUAD Creative Events does crazy, magical work. We don’t do death by PowerPoint or school room seating. We do fun events. We pull rabbits out of hats. We deliver creatively. The things around us inspire us to mainline beauty and originality into unforgettable events.

Here are some suggestions on how to add a dash of fun and creative magic to any event.

Live Drawing

“Drawing is vision on paper.” Andrew Loomis

Using an artist to document the flow of an event or workshop creates a totally unique reference point for you and your client. Live drawing with one of our many talented local artists is also a wonderful way to engage an audience.

Creating Event MagicTheatre

“A room is like a stage. If you see it without lighting, it can be the coldest place in the world.” Paul Lynde

Adding a theatrical element can be a solution to many event concerns, not least when you’re tight on budget. Use an unexpected idea such as a person in a bubble or amazing dancers along with spectacular lighting. From up-lighting to light shows, a good lighting engineer can create the perfect ambiance (for the ultimate group selfie) or the theatrical razzmatazz your event needs to take it from good to great.

Craftsmanship

“Speak softly, but carry a big can of paint.” Banksy

Create a unique gift for a special occasion by using local crafters. In one of our recent jobs for KFC we used caps which were personalised by artists. They bring bespoke design to anything you can think of. It’s a win-win to support local artists and have a one-of-a-kind gift to give away.

Creating Event MagicBody Art / Adornment

“Tattoos are walking artwork.” Tattoo Saying

We’re not suggesting all your guests receive permanent tattoos, but fake ones are cool and fun, especially when the design ties into the brand experience. If it’s a celebration, having a props collection of feather boas, masks and wigs will always be a winner. Celebrate bodies, art and dressing up!

Urban Art

“Design should never say, ‘Look at me!’ It should always say, ‘Look at this!’” David Craib

We loved the story of red umbrellas (anonymously) suspended on trees at Vancouver’s Art Gallery Plaza so much we incorporated the concept into an exhibition and a gala event. There are amazing things happening all around us. The urban art scene in Joburg is buzzing with graffiti and just a walk though (and between) the Everard Read and Circa Galleries in Rosebank should throw out some inspiring ideas.

Creating Event MagicDIY

“The soul should always stand ajar.”  Emily Dickenson

Want your attendees to see the world from a different perspective? Encourage them to put pen (pencil, whatever) to paper. Drawing or doodling can plot a career vision or get the creative juices flowing at the start of a brainstorm.  It’s also a brilliant way to support one of theSQUAD’s pro bono passions –1000 Drawings Johannesburg. Your A5 photograph, drawing, embroidery, mosaic or finger painting would be greatly appreciated. All the proceeds of the sale of your donation goes towards child education.
