The Squad Creative Event Managers from Johannesburg are here to combat feelings of "eco-fatigue" or "greenwashing" with good news about recycling; plus some creative ideas for repurposing. Don't throw it away, re-imagine it.
"Creativity means repurposing. Even your regrets can be repurposed." Steve Supple
The Squad recently planned and managed an awards event in Johannesburg involving a recycled ramp, wine bottles as vases, old books and magazines folded into décor, water bottles as chandeliers, solar jars as table lighting and plastic bottles as plant holders. It was inspiring to see our guests embracing the concept of dressing up in repurposed outfits and strutting their stuff on the recycled ramp.
"2 billion PET bottles were collected for recycling across South Africa during the course of 2016, creating some 62 000 income opportunities for small and micro-collector." Cheri Scholtz, PETCO CEO
Plastic bottle recycled tonnage in SA has grown by 800% since 2005. Awareness around the plastic pollution crisis can be seen in campaigns like Stop Sucking where restaurants won't use plastic straws.
"In South Africa, indigenous trees from natural forests are never used for papermaking." PRASA
Recycled paper fibre is an important raw material in the production of packaging and tissue products. Some 65% of the country’s paper mills depend on recycled fibre and a number of them use it as their only fibre source.
"A bottle is not just a bottle, it's anything you need it to be."
Glass is one of the very few products that can be completely recycled again and again. But most often, it ends up in landfills or oceans where it takes approximately a million years to decompose. However, glass recycling in South Africa is making the country one of the leaders in this field in the world.
“The best things to do with the best things in life is to give them away.” Dorothy Day
